Antonia Marsh

Antonia Marsh Object Text

British coastal towns are well-known for the manufacture and sale of a certain type of candy. Neither particularly delicious nor nutritious, the popularity of said candy has long-since baffled myself as well as countless others. Colloquially known as “rock,” a moniker devoted surely to designate its rather dense and brittle consistency, this bizarre substance is sometimes lovingly moulded into shapes that represent unforgettable symbols of British culture. Herewith stands a plastic-wrapped Full English Breakfast, made entirely from “rock" and complete with paper plate. A few summers ago I went to the seaside, to the famed Margate to visit some friends and picked up this souvenir. It’s sat on my mantelpiece ever since and it would be a damn lie if I said that it didn’t influence my practice - an object so imbued with associations and nostalgia, concerns with national identity or wider conversations about the meal as a ritual can inform everything from composition to content.
